About this episode

Paul and James debate the most consequential systems decision most companies face: build a custom CRM or buy a platform. They cut past the hype to the real total cost, ownership, and risk tradeoffs.

Key ideas

  • 01Building a CRM means signing up to run it forever
  • 02Total cost of ownership matters far more than sticker price
  • 03Build what makes you different, buy what makes you normal
  • 04For most companies the CRM is plumbing, not competitive advantage

Show notes

What we covered

Few decisions lock in a company's operational future like build versus buy on the CRM. In this featured episode, Paul and James work through when custom actually pays off, when it's a trap, and how to reason about total cost honestly instead of emotionally.

In this episode

  • The three questions that decide build vs. buy before anything else
  • Why total cost of ownership dwarfs sticker price on both sides
  • The hidden maintenance burden of a system you own
  • Where platforms give you leverage and where they box you in
  • A scorecard for making the call with your own numbers

Paul: Everyone wants to build because building feels like control. But control has a maintenance contract, and it never expires. You're not just building the CRM, you're signing up to run it forever.

James: Right, and the sticker price on a platform looks scary until you price out an engineering team maintaining a custom system for five years. Suddenly the SaaS bill is the cheap part.

Paul: So the honest question isn't 'can we build it.' Of course you can build it. The question is whether your CRM is a source of competitive advantage or just plumbing.

James: And for most companies it's plumbing. Excellent plumbing you should buy, configure well, and never think about at the infrastructure level again.

Paul: Build the things that make you different. Buy the things that make you normal.
