About this episode

Every CRM vendor and consultant has an incentive. Paul and James lay out a buying process that surfaces real fit, exposes hidden costs, and helps you tell honest advisors from salespeople in disguise.

Key ideas

  • 01Most advisors get paid based on your CRM decision
  • 02Know the incentive before you weigh the advice
  • 03Requirements-first turns demos into tests, not theater
  • 04A reference customer who looks like you is the best signal

Show notes

What we covered

CRM selection is a minefield of biased advice, slick demos, and incentives you can't see. This episode gives you a structured way to evaluate platforms and, just as importantly, to evaluate the people telling you which one to buy.

In this episode

  • Starting from your requirements, not the vendor's feature list
  • Running demos that test reality instead of watching theater
  • Spotting the incentives behind every recommendation
  • The reference checks that actually reveal problems
  • Using an RFP to keep the process honest

Paul: The first thing to understand about CRM selection is that almost everyone advising you gets paid based on your answer. The vendor, the reseller, the consultant, all of them.

James: Which doesn't make them dishonest. It just means you need to know the incentive before you weigh the advice. Ask how they get paid and listen carefully to the answer.

Paul: And start from your requirements, not their feature list. If you walk in knowing exactly what you need, the demo becomes a test instead of a show.

James: The best signal is a reference customer who looks like you and will actually take your call. That conversation tells you more than any demo.
